Word Count to Page Count Estimator

Estimate Your Page Count

Knowing your approximate page count before you format is essential. It determines your gutter margin, your spine width, your printing cost, and ultimately your retail price.

How the Estimate Works

The calculation uses industry-standard words-per-page averages for each trim size, then adds approximately 10 pages for front and back matter (title page, copyright, table of contents, and blank pages to ensure an even page count).

How to Use This Tool

Enter your total manuscript word count in the input field above, select the trim size you plan to use for your KDP paperback, and click Estimate Pages. The tool will calculate your approximate page count and estimated spine width based on industry-standard words-per-page averages.

Your word count should include all body text but exclude front matter (title page, copyright page, dedication) and back matter (about the author, acknowledgements), as the tool adds approximately 10 pages to account for these elements. You can find your word count in Microsoft Word under the Review tab or in the bottom status bar.

The words-per-page estimate varies by trim size because larger pages accommodate more text. A 6 x 9 inch page typically holds around 250 words with standard formatting (11-12pt font, 1.15-1.5 line spacing), while a smaller 5 x 8 inch page holds approximately 200 words.

Why Page Count Matters for KDP

Your page count is the foundation for several critical calculations in the KDP publishing process. First, it determines your minimum gutter margin requirement. Amazon requires wider inside margins for thicker books to ensure readability near the spine. Use our KDP Margin Calculator once you know your page count.

Second, your page count directly determines your spine width, which is essential for designing your book cover. The spine must be exactly the right width; too narrow and the text will wrap onto the front or back cover, too wide and there will be blank space. Our Spine Width Calculator uses your page count and paper type to calculate the precise spine measurement.

Third, page count is the primary factor in KDP's printing cost calculation. Amazon charges a fixed cost per page printed, so your page count directly affects your minimum list price and maximum royalty. Understanding this relationship before you format helps you make informed decisions about trim size, font size, and line spacing.

Common Page Count Mistakes

Using the Word page count instead of the formatted page count. The page count shown in Microsoft Word is based on A4 or Letter paper size with default margins. Your actual KDP page count will be different because your trim size and margins are different. This tool provides a much more accurate estimate.

Forgetting that page count must be even. Every printed book must have an even number of pages because each physical sheet of paper has two sides. If your formatted manuscript has an odd number of pages, KDP will add a blank page at the end. This tool automatically rounds up to an even number.

Not accounting for chapter breaks. If each chapter starts on a new page (which is standard practice), you will have blank half-pages at the end of most chapters. For a book with 20 chapters, this could add 10-20 extra pages beyond what a simple word-count calculation suggests.

Ignoring the impact of images and tables. If your book contains images, tables, or other non-text elements, your actual page count will be higher than a word-count-based estimate. Each full-page image adds a page, and tables often create extra white space.

Using cream paper calculations for white paper (or vice versa). Cream paper is slightly thicker than white paper, which affects spine width but not page count. However, if you switch paper types after designing your cover, you will need to recalculate your spine width.
