A reader finishes your book at eleven at night, likes it, and taps your name. Amazon takes them to your author page. There’s a bio, a list of your titles, a Follow button. There is nothing on that page they can click to reach you, and no way for you to know they were ever there.

Short version: if you’ve published one book, have no second in progress, no mailing list and no plans to sell direct, you can skip the website for now and nothing bad will happen. Set up Amazon Author Central instead, then spend the afternoon you saved on the next book.
