KDP Printing Cost Reference
Amazon’s printing costs vary by marketplace and ink type, and KDP has revised them (most recently in its 2025 print-pricing update), so treat the figures below as indicative and confirm current rates on KDP’s printing-cost page before relying on an exact number:
Printing cost is banded by page count, not a single flat rate. Short books are charged a flat per-book price with no per-page cost; longer books switch to a lower fixed charge plus a per-page rate. All figures below are Amazon’s own, for regular trim sizes, read from KDP’s Paperback Printing Cost page on 11 August 2026.

Amazon.com.au starts its black-ink band at 108 pages rather than 110, and Amazon publishes no standard-colour rate for that marketplace at all — the calculator says so rather than guessing.
Paperback Royalty Formula
Your Royalty = (List Price × 60%) − Printing Cost
The 60% rate applies to titles priced at or above each marketplace’s breakpoint (about £7.99 on Amazon.co.uk, $9.99 on Amazon.com); lower-priced titles earn 50% (KDP’s June 2025 update). Expanded Distribution is 40%.
The printing cost is calculated as:
Printing Cost = Fixed Cost + (Page Count × Per-Page Cost), using the band your page count falls in
For example, a 250-page black-ink book priced at £12.99 on Amazon.co.uk. At 250 pages it sits in the 110–828 band, so the rate is £0.85 plus £0.010 per page:
- Amazon’s share: £12.99 × 40% = £5.20
- Printing cost: £0.85 + (250 × £0.010) = £3.35
- Your royalty: £12.99 × 60% − £3.35 = £4.44
The same book at 100 pages would fall in the flat band instead: £1.93 with no per-page charge.
