Quick Answer: Your book is usually missing from Amazon search for one of seven reasons. It’s new (Amazon says it can take up to 72 hours after publishing or republishing). You’re searching the wrong store. It’s been flagged as sexually explicit, which hides it from general search. Amazon is showing another format of it. Its title is over 200 characters. Your rights don’t cover that marketplace. Or it is in search but ranked too low to find. First, prove it’s live: go to your KDP Bookshelf and select View on Amazon next to the format.
First: prove the book is live
Before anything else, check the book actually has a page. Amazon calls this “the most reliable way to reach your book’s detail page”:
- Go to your Bookshelf in KDP.
- Find the book.
- Next to the format (Kindle eBook, Paperback or Hardcover), select View on Amazon.
- Choose a marketplace, such as Amazon.co.uk.
If the page opens, the book is live and the problem is search. If it doesn’t, the book isn’t published yet, or not in that marketplace. Check its status on the Bookshelf.
The seven causes, in the order to check them
1. It was published or republished in the last 72 hours
Amazon: “It can take up to 72 hours after publishing or republishing for your book to appear in search results.” That includes changes to a live book. If you edited the title, keywords or description yesterday, give it three days before looking for a fault.
2. You’re searching the wrong store or department
Amazon’s own search tips: choose Books for paperbacks and hardcovers, or Kindle Store for ebooks, from the drop-down next to the search box. It also suggests clearing your browser’s cookies and cache and searching in a private (incognito) window, so your history doesn’t change what you see.
Searching from the UK? Use amazon.co.uk. Amazon says “availability of books may vary based on your home country or region, affecting search results you see.”
3. Your rights don’t cover that marketplace
KDP only lists a book where you’ve said you hold the rights. Check the territories you chose:
- Ebooks: the Kindle eBook Pricing page.
- Paperback or hardcover: the Rights & Pricing page.
If the UK isn’t included, the book won’t appear on Amazon.co.uk.
4. It has been flagged as sexually explicit
Amazon: “Books containing sexually explicit images or titles will not surface in general product searches.”
- You ticked it by mistake: in Primary Audience, set Sexually Explicit Images or Title to No, then save and republish.
- KDP flagged it: Amazon says “your book will be marked as sexually explicit, and you will not be able to change this”.
The cover and title words are what Amazon looks at.
5. Amazon is showing a different format
Amazon: “Amazon generally displays only one format for each book in search results.” Your paperback may be the one that shows while the Kindle edition exists. Open the product page and select See all formats and editions. If the formats aren’t linked on one page, see how to link your formats.
6. The title is over 200 characters
Amazon: “Book titles more than 200 characters will not display in search results on Amazon.” That counts the title as you entered it in KDP. Keyword-stuffed subtitles are the usual cause. Amazon’s keyword page also notes customers “are more likely to skim past long titles (over 60 characters)” (KDP keywords).
7. It’s in search, just too far down to see
This is the most common reason of all. Amazon says search results come from “information that is not always visible on the search results page, such as keywords, book details, and the text of each book”, and that “if a book is on the first page of search results today, there’s no guarantee that the same book will appear on the first page tomorrow.”
Searching your exact title should find a live book. If it does, but searching your genre doesn’t, the book is searchable, it just isn’t ranking. Amazon’s keyword page says keywords work “along with factors like sales history and Amazon Best Sellers Rank” (KDP keywords). The fixes are:
- better keywords;
- the right categories (Amazon says new categories can take up to 72 hours to show);
- sales, which the launch pricing plan and Amazon Ads help with.
How it all fits together: how Amazon ranks books.
What about Google?
Amazon says it “has no information to provide on how other search engines … display search results on their site”. If your book is on Amazon but not on Google, that’s a separate question: Google decides for itself which Amazon pages to show. Your own author page and the sites that review your book matter more there; see author website SEO for AI search.
Check how findable your book is
Once the book shows up, the next question is how easily readers find it. The free Book Score check reads your Amazon page and asks ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini the questions readers ask, then gives a score out of 100 and the three fixes worth most, in about a minute.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for a book to show up in Amazon search?
Amazon says it can take up to 72 hours after publishing or republishing for a book to appear in search results. New categories can also take up to 72 hours to show.
Why can I find my book by its title but not by its genre?
The book is live and searchable, but not ranking for those words. Amazon uses your keywords, book details and text, along with sales history and Best Sellers Rank. Better keywords and categories, and more sales, move it up.
Why does only my paperback show up, not my Kindle book?
Amazon says it “generally displays only one format for each book in search results”. Open the product page and choose “See all formats and editions” to see every format.
My book was marked as sexually explicit by mistake. Can I fix it?
If you chose it yourself, yes: set Sexually Explicit Images or Title to No in Primary Audience and republish. If KDP marked it, Amazon says you will not be able to change it.
Why isn’t my book showing on Amazon UK?
Check that your territories include the UK, and search amazon.co.uk in the Books or Kindle Store department. Amazon says availability “may vary based on your home country or region”.
