In brief

Book formatting for Amazon KDP in the UK costs £69 for a print interior, £119 for print + Kindle, £179 for all three formats and £219 for a full-colour picture book. Turnaround is 24 hours, two revision rounds are included, and if KDP rejects the file on a formatting issue we fix it free.

See the technical detail

For the authors who want to check our work: we hand-set the interior and pre-flight every page against Amazon KDP’s published specification. That means mirrored gutter margins scaled to your page count, embedded fonts, 300 DPI image pre-flight, correct bleed, running heads and page numbers, real small caps and proper hyphenation, working contents links, and a Kindle file that reflows correctly on every device. Two revision rounds are included in every package.

The difference, on the page

Same manuscript. Left is how it leaves Word. Right is how it goes to Amazon.

An unformatted manuscript exported from Word: US Letter page size, double-spaced Times New Roman, no running heads or page numbers, chapter heading set as bold body text, straight quotes, and a single stranded line at the foot of the page.
Before — straight out of Word. Letter page size instead of a book trim, double-spaced, ragged right, no running heads, no page numbers, chapter opening set as bold body text, straight quotes and double hyphens, and a widow stranded at the foot of the page. Tap to enlarge.
The same manuscript set as a 5 by 8 inch book interior: mirrored gutter margins, running head on the verso, chapter opening on the recto with sinkage and a drop cap, justified text with hyphenation, and old-style page numbers.
After — set for a 5×8in paperback. Mirrored gutter scaled to page count, running head on the left, chapter opening on the right where it belongs, drop cap and sinkage, justified text with proper hyphenation, real small caps, and old-style folios. Tap to enlarge.

A worked example on sample text, set to the same spec we build every client interior to — not a stock mock-up. Your book gets the trim size, typeface and chapter styling that suit your genre.

The gauntlet · every file, every time

Your manuscript runs 30+ checks against Amazon’s own requirements — before you upload.

  7. Clickable table of contents
  8. Clean chapter recognition

UK book formatting and typesetting for Amazon KDP

If you’re looking for a book formatter in the UK, you’ve found the right place. Publishing.co.uk is a specialist book formatting service for self-publishing authors — we take your manuscript and turn it into print-ready and Kindle-ready files that pass Amazon KDP’s checks first time.

We handle the typesetting work that trips most authors up: margins and gutters set to KDP spec, mirrored gutter widths scaled to your page count, 0.125-inch bleed for full-colour pages, embedded fonts, 300 DPI image pre-flight, clickable table of contents, and semantic page-break logic that keeps chapters, scene breaks and front matter exactly where they should be.

What you get back: a print-ready PDF for KDP paperback, a reflowable Kindle EPUB optimised for every device, and (in the Complete Package) a distribution-ready ePub for Apple Books, Kobo and other retailers. Cover wrap calibration is included — spine width auto-calculated from your final page count, tested against KDP’s print profile.

Turnaround is 24 hours from when we receive your manuscript. Rush jobs under 12 hours are available. We accept Word, PDF, Google Docs, RTF, ODT, EPUB and plain text — no special software needed, no Mac required. You send us the file, we send back the finished book.

Every package includes two free revision rounds and our formatting fix-free guarantee: if KDP rejects your file for a formatting reason, we fix it at no cost. We’ve maintained a 100% KDP approval rate, but the guarantee is the principle.

Not sure your manuscript is ready? Run our free KDP Readiness Score — 30+ checks built from KDP’s published specifications, in 60 seconds, no payment or card required. It’s the fastest way to find out whether your file needs professional formatting or is already good to go. Authors who score below 80 typically save hours of rejection-and-resubmit cycles by having the file formatted properly before upload.

UK-based and operating since 2018. Prices are in GBP, starting at £69 for a print interior. We format every genre — from romance and thriller to cookbooks, picture books, poetry and complex non-fiction with footnotes, sidebars and image plates. Pick your genre below for specific notes and the trim size we’d recommend.

We’re an ALLi-approved partner, vetted against the Alliance of Independent Authors’ Code of Standards. Whether you need help typesetting for Amazon or a full multi-format book publishing package covering print, Kindle and ePub, everything is handled under one roof with transparent pricing and no hidden fees.

What UK authors say

A real review from a verified customer.

★★★★★

“Publishing.co.uk is a fantastic service. They did an incredible job of formatting my book, made all the small edits I requested, and turned it around — as promised — within 24 hours. It took a massive load of stress off my plate, and they caught and corrected a few last little typos too. The guides they provide are so, so helpful. Highly recommend.”

Formatting FAQ

The questions we get asked most often.

What file formats do you accept?

Word (.docx, .doc), PDF, Google Docs, RTF, ODT, EPUB, plain text. Up to 50MB. Picture-book and cookbook authors can also send InDesign or Affinity files if they have them.

How long does formatting take?

Standard turnaround is 24 hours from when we receive your manuscript. Rush turnaround under 12 hours is available as an add-on (+£29). Picture books and complex non-fiction with heavy illustration may take 48–72 hours.

Do you guarantee KDP approval?

We build every file to pass KDP’s formatting checks, and if KDP rejects your file for a formatting reason, we fix it free. We can’t guarantee acceptance for reasons unrelated to formatting (for example content-policy or rights issues), which are outside our control.

How much does book formatting cost?

Print interior starts at £69. Print + Kindle is £119. The Complete Package (print + Kindle + ePub for Apple/Kobo) is £179. Picture books are £219. All prices include two free revision rounds and our formatting fix-free guarantee.

Can you format hardback books?

Yes. Hardcover (case laminate and dust jacket) is fully supported on Amazon KDP as of 2026. We format hardback interiors and calibrate covers to KDP’s hardcover template spec.

What books can you format?

Every kind. Novels, non-fiction, memoir, cookbooks, picture books, workbooks, planners, multilingual / RTL, hardback gift editions. Different book types use different pricing tiers (£69 for standard print up to £219 for picture books). If your book is a simple text-only novel and you’re comfortable on a Mac, you might find Vellum cheaper for repeated use. We don’t try to compete with Vellum on novels — we’re built for everything else.

How many revisions are included?

Two free revision rounds in every package. Most books need none. Complex non-fiction sometimes needs both. Additional rounds beyond two are £19 each.

KDP rejected my file. Can you help?

Yes — re-formatting a rejected file is one of our most common jobs. Send us the file plus the rejection email and we’ll diagnose and fix. If you’ve already paid for our standard service, we cover this free under the KDP-approval guarantee.

Choosing a formatter

What UK book formatting actually involves.

What a book formatting service does that Word cannot

Word writes manuscripts. It does not typeset books. A print-ready interior needs mirrored margins with a gutter that widens as page count grows, running headers that know the difference between a chapter opener and a body page, chapter starts that always fall on a recto, and fonts embedded so the printer renders exactly what you saw. Miss any of those and Amazon either rejects the file or prints something that reads as self-published from the first page.

A Kindle file is a different job again. Reflowable EPUB has to hold up whether the reader is on a Paperwhite at the smallest type size or a phone in landscape, which means no fixed page breaks, a genuinely linked table of contents, and images sized so the delivery fee does not eat the royalty on every single sale.

What you get from us, in plain terms

A print-ready PDF built to your exact trim size, and where your package includes it, a Kindle EPUB and an ePub for Apple Books and Kobo. Both files are yours outright — no subscription, no licence, no watermark. Every package includes two free revision rounds and the KDP-approval guarantee: if Amazon rejects the file on a formatting issue, we fix it free.

Standard turnaround is 24 hours from receiving your manuscript. Complex illustrated work runs 48–72 hours because it genuinely needs longer, and we would rather say so than miss it.

How much book formatting costs in the UK

Ours starts at £69 for a print interior, £119 for print plus Kindle, and £179 for the complete package including ePub for Apple and Kobo. Picture books are £219 because full-colour image placement and bleed are a different job.

For context on the wider market: DIY with free tools costs nothing but typically 10–30 hours on a first book; paid formatting software runs from around £45 to roughly £186 as a one-off; and freelance formatters commonly sit in the £50–£350 range depending on complexity. We wrote up the full market comparison in our guide to UK book formatting costs if you want the detail before deciding.

How to choose a book formatter

  • Ask what happens if Amazon rejects it. A formatter confident in their files will fix it free. If that is not in writing, the risk is yours.
  • Check you get the source-quality files, not a preview. You should end up owning a print-ready PDF and a valid EPUB, not a proof you cannot upload.
  • Ask how many revision rounds are included. One is rarely enough on non-fiction; unlimited usually means the price already assumes you will not use it.
  • Check they work to UK trim sizes and pricing. Much of the market is US-first, which is how books end up at 6×9 with US-centric margins when 5×8 or 5.06×7.81 was the right call.
  • Be honest about your book type. A plain text novel on a Mac may genuinely be cheaper to do yourself in Vellum over time. We say so on this page because it is true; we are built for everything more complicated than that.

Is it worth paying someone?

It depends entirely on how many books you plan to publish and how complex they are. One straightforward novel, and you are comfortable learning software: doing it yourself is a reasonable call. A book with tables, images, footnotes, multiple languages or a picture-book layout — or a deadline — and the hours you would spend learning are worth more than the fee. Our honest comparison of both routes is in DIY formatting versus hiring a service.
