After months (or years) of writing and editing, finally hitting “Publish” on Amazon KDP is a monumental moment. However, that excitement can quickly turn to frustration when you receive an email stating your book has been rejected during the review process.
KDP’s automated and manual review systems are strict. They exist to ensure every printed book meets a minimum quality standard. If your file is rejected, it is almost always due to a formatting error.
Here are the most common KDP formatting mistakes that lead to rejection and how to avoid them.
1. Bleed Errors (The #1 Culprit)
“Bleed” refers to printing that extends to the very edge of the page. In commercial printing, books are printed on large sheets of paper and then trimmed to their final size. If an image is meant to reach the edge of the page, it must extend past the trim line to account for slight variations in the cutting process.
The Mistake: Authors often select “Bleed” in their KDP setup but fail to actually extend their images 0.125 inches (3.2 mm) beyond the page edge in their PDF file. Conversely, authors might select “No Bleed” but have an image or background color that touches the edge of the page.
The Fix:
- If your book has images that go to the edge (like a children’s book or a photo-heavy non-fiction book), you must select “Bleed” in KDP and ensure your PDF is sized correctly (e.g., a 6x9 book with bleed must be exported as a 6.125 x 9.25 inch PDF).
- If your book is just text, select “No Bleed” and ensure absolutely nothing (no text, no page numbers, no images) touches the edge of the page.
2. Text Outside the “Safe Zone” (Margin Errors)
Even if your book doesn’t use bleed, all essential elements (text, page numbers, important parts of images) must remain within the “Safe Zone.” This zone is typically 0.25 inches (6.4 mm) inside the trim line.
The Mistake: Page numbers or headers are placed too close to the edge of the page. During printing, there’s a risk they could be cut off or appear awkwardly close to the edge.
The Fix: Ensure your top, bottom, and outside margins are at least 0.375 inches (9.5 mm) to be safe. Check your headers and footers specifically, as word processors often default to placing them very close to the edge.
3. Insufficient Gutter (Inside Margin)
The “gutter” is the inside margin of your book—the part that is glued into the spine. The thicker the book, the more pages are pulled into the binding, requiring a larger gutter.
The Mistake: Using the same margin for the inside and outside of the page. If the inside margin is too small, the text will be swallowed by the spine, making the book unreadable without breaking it open.
The Fix: KDP has specific minimum gutter requirements based on page count. For a 150-300 page book, you need a minimum inside margin of 0.5 inches (12.7 mm). For a 300-500 page book, you need 0.625 inches (15.9 mm). Always calculate your gutter based on your final page count.
4. Unflattened PDFs and Transparency Issues
When you create a PDF from software like Word, InDesign, or Canva, the file often contains layers, transparent elements, or complex vector graphics.
The Mistake: Uploading a PDF that has not been “flattened.” KDP’s printers often struggle to process complex, layered PDFs, leading to printing errors, missing text, or outright rejection.
The Fix: Always export your final interior file as a flattened PDF. If you are using Adobe Acrobat, use the “Print Production” > “Flattener Preview” tool. If you are using Canva, ensure you select “PDF Print” and check the box to “Flatten PDF.”
5. Low-Resolution Images
KDP requires all images to be high quality to ensure they print clearly.
The Mistake: Using images downloaded from the web (which are typically 72 PPI) in a print book. These will appear pixelated, blurry, and unprofessional when printed.
The Fix: All images in your print manuscript must be at least 300 PPI (Pixels Per Inch) at the size they will be printed. Do not simply scale up a small image; you must start with a high-resolution source file.
6. Missing or Incorrect Pagination
Page numbers seem simple, but they are a frequent source of errors.
The Mistake: Page numbers appearing on blank pages, the title page, or the copyright page. Another common error is having the pagination start on the left-hand side (even numbers should always be on the left, odd numbers on the right).
The Fix: Use section breaks in your word processor to separate your front matter from your main text. Start your page numbering (Page 1) on the first page of Chapter 1, ensuring it falls on a right-hand (odd) page. Remove page numbers from all front matter and any intentionally blank pages.
7. The Spine Text Error (Cover Formatting)
While this guide focuses on interior formatting, cover rejections are incredibly common.
The Mistake: Trying to put text on the spine of a book that is too thin. KDP requires a minimum page count of 79 pages to include spine text. If your book is 78 pages or fewer, and you include spine text, it will be rejected.
The Fix: Check your final page count after formatting the interior. If it’s under 79 pages, remove all text from the spine of your cover file.
